Updates and backups: who does what

A website needs regular care behind the scenes, in the same way a van needs servicing. Here’s what that involves and who does it.

You'll learn

What updates and backups are, and which jobs are yours

Takes

About 3 minutes

You'll need

Nothing, just a few minutes

Watch: “How to backup your site”, an official video from WordPress. It shows the same job on their own demo site, so your screen may look a little different. The written steps below are the ones to follow.

1

What updates are

WordPress, Elementor and your plugins all release new versions to fix problems and close security gaps. A site that’s never updated becomes easier to break into.

2

What backups are

A backup is a full copy of your website taken at a point in time. If something goes badly wrong, the site can be put back to that copy.

3

If you host with us

We look after updates, backups and security as part of your hosting. You’ll see update notices in your dashboard. You can ignore them.

4

If you host elsewhere

Ask your hosting company how often backups are taken and how to restore one. Take a backup before any update, and update one thing at a time.

5

Your part

Use a strong password that you don’t use anywhere else, keep it to yourself, and tell us quickly if anything looks wrong.

Common mistakes

I clicked Update on a plugin and something broke.

Tell us straight away and say which plugin. Don’t update anything else.

There's a red number beside Plugins or Updates.

That’s the count of updates waiting. It isn’t an error.

Someone emailed saying my site has a problem and offered to fix it.

These are nearly always sales emails or scams. Forward it to us before replying or clicking anything.

Still stuck?

Tell us which page it’s on and what you’re trying to do. We can talk you through it or make the change for you.
