Training / Staying safe / Lesson 3 of 3

When to stop and ask for help

Editing your own site saves time and money, but a few situations are quicker and safer to hand over. Knowing them is part of doing this well.

You'll learn

The warning signs that mean you should stop and get in touch

Takes

About 3 minutes

You'll need

Nothing, just a few minutes

1

The site shows an error or a blank white page

Don’t keep refreshing or clicking. Note what you did just before and tell us.

2

You can't log in and a reset hasn't worked

Try once more, then stop. Repeated tries can lock you out for longer.

3

Something changed that you didn't do

New pages, strange links or users you don’t recognise can be a sign that someone else has got in. Tell us the same day.

4

Enquiries have gone quiet

If your form normally brings in messages and they’ve stopped, send a test. If it doesn’t arrive, get in touch.

5

The change affects the whole site

New colours, a new menu layout, a new booking system or anything in Settings is best planned with us first.

6

You've spent more than twenty minutes stuck

Your time has a value too. Send us a note and move on with your day.

Common mistakes

What should I include when I get in touch?

The page address, what you were trying to do, what happened, and a screenshot if you can.

Will it cost me?

It depends on the job and on what your plan with us covers. We’ll always tell you before starting any paid work.

It's the evening or the weekend.

Send the message anyway with as much detail as you can, and leave the site alone until you hear back.

Still stuck?

Tell us which page it’s on and what you’re trying to do. We can talk you through it or make the change for you.
