Basic SEO: your page title and description

When your page appears on Google, people see a blue title and a short grey description. You can write both. Clear ones bring more of the right people to your site.

You'll learn

How to control what Google shows for each of your pages

Takes

About 5 minutes

You'll need

To be logged in, and for your site to have the Yoast SEO plugin

1

Open the page in WordPress

Go to Pages, hover over the page and click Edit, not Edit with Elementor. Scroll down to the Yoast SEO box.

2

Write the SEO title

Say what the page is and where you are, then your business name. For example “Loft conversions in Formby | Your Business”. Keep it under about 60 characters.

3

Write the meta description

In one or two sentences, say what the page offers and why someone should click. Aim for about 150 characters.

4

Check the slug

The slug is the end of the page’s web address. Keep it short and plain, such as loft-conversions. Don’t change the slug of an old page, because links to it will break.

5

Read the preview

Yoast shows how the result will look on Google. If the title or description is cut short, trim it.

6

Save

Click Save or Update at the top right.

Common mistakes

There's no Yoast SEO box.

Your site may use a different tool, or it may be turned off for your login. Ask us.

Yoast shows an orange or red light.

It’s a guide, not a rule. Follow the suggestions that make sense and ignore the rest.

I changed it and Google still shows the old text.

Google can take days or weeks to update, and sometimes picks its own description.
