Pages and posts: what's the difference?

WordPress has two kinds of content, and people often mix them up. Choosing the right one keeps your website tidy.

You'll learn

When to add a page and when to add a post

Takes

About 3 minutes

You'll need

Nothing, just a few minutes

Watch: “Understanding the difference between WordPress posts and pages”, an official video from WordPress. It shows the same job on their own demo site, so your screen may look a little different. The written steps below are the ones to follow.

1

Pages are permanent

A page is for information that stays put: Home, About, Services, Contact. Pages usually appear in your menu and are edited with Elementor.

2

Posts are dated

A post is an article with a date on it: news, advice, a recent job, an offer. New posts appear at the top of your blog automatically, and older ones move down.

3

How to decide

Ask yourself whether it will still be true and useful in two years. If yes, it’s a page. If it’s news or timely, it’s a post.

4

Posts help you get found

Each helpful post is another way for people to find you on Google. Answering the questions your customers ask is a good place to start.

Common mistakes

I added a new service as a post.

It will sit in your blog, not in your menu. Make it a page instead.

I added news as a page.

It won’t show on your blog. Copy the text into a new post and delete the page.

Still stuck?
