How your website works
Before you change anything, it helps to know what you’re looking at. A website has a handful of parts, and each one does a single job. You only ever work with two of them.
What the parts of your website are and what each one does
Nothing, just a few minutes
Watch: “Introduction to WordPress”, an official video from WordPress. It shows the same job on their own demo site, so your screen may look a little different. The written steps below are the ones to follow.
Your domain is your address
The domain is the name people type to find you, such as yourbusiness.co.uk. It’s rented by the year. It doesn’t hold your website. It only points people to where the website lives.
Hosting is where the website lives
Hosting is space on a computer that is switched on all day and night, so your website is always there when someone visits. If you host with us, we look after this for you.
WordPress is the system behind the scenes
WordPress is the software your website runs on. It stores your pages, blog posts and images, and gives you a private area to log in to. That private area is called the dashboard.
Elementor is the tool you edit pages with
Elementor is a page editor that sits inside WordPress. It shows your page as visitors see it and lets you click on something to change it. Most of your editing happens here.
Plugins add extra features
A plugin is an add-on, such as a contact form or a booking calendar. You don’t need to touch these day to day.
Common mistakes
I'm not sure who looks after my domain or hosting.
Ask us. It’s worth knowing before something needs renewing.
I think I need to learn all of this.
You don’t. If you can log in to WordPress and open a page in Elementor, you can do most everyday jobs.
Still stuck?
Tell us which page it’s on and what you’re trying to do. We can talk you through it or make the change for you.
